Last Rites or Antim Sanskaar –

Sixteen samskaras have been described in Hinduism from birth to death. Among these, the last i.e. the sixteenth rites are the rites that take place after death, which include the last farewell of the person, cremation, and the rituals that bring salvation to the soul. The last rites have been given a lot in the scriptures because by this a person gets the best place in the hereafter and the birth and happiness in the next birth in the best family, in Sanatan Dharma, the sage is cremated and the common people are cremated.

Many reasons account for this. Sadhu is given samadhi because his body has a special energy and aura due to meditation and meditation, so his physical energy is allowed to dissipate naturally, while the common man is cremated because if his own body If there is any attachment left, then it should be left, it is said in Garuda Purana that the soul of a person who does not perform the last rites, wanders like a ghost after death. And suffers all kinds of sufferings. Death is not considered the end of life in Hinduism. Upon death, it is believed that this is the time when the soul leaves this body and takes on a new body again, or begins its journey to attain salvation. This is the reason behind the cremation of the dead body after the death of a person. After coming out of the dead body, the soul is given speed on the path of salvation.

It is believed in the scriptures that until the dead body is not cremated, it does not attain salvation. According to the scriptures, cremation is the last rite among the sixteen rites.

General Description

Last rites, also known as antim sanskar, are a set of rituals performed in Hinduism at the end of a person’s life. They are typically performed by a priest and involve a number of ceremonies and rituals designed to release the soul of the deceased from the physical body and prepare it for its journey to the afterlife.

It is believed that in this way every particle of the body merges with nature. Due to this many micro-organisms are also saved from entering the dead body and no infection or disease spreads around. For this reason, for the total destruction of such creatures, the practice of burning the dead body has been going on for centuries. After which the sins of the dead person have washed away by shedding the remaining ashes in the Ganges or any holy river. According to such Garuda Purana, the soul finds peace, and the doors of entry into the next life are opened.

The specifics of how the last rites puja, also known as antim sanskar puja, is performed can vary depending on regional and cultural traditions, as well as the individual preferences of the family of the deceased.

Always keep the head of the dead body on the pyre towards the south. In fact, according to the scriptures, the head of a dying person should be kept towards the north, and at the time of cremation after death, his head should be kept towards the south. It is believed that if a person has difficulty in passing out of life, then by keeping the brain towards the north direction, due to gravity, the life comes out quickly and with less pain. On the other hand, the reason for keeping the head towards the south after death is that according to the scriptures, the south direction is of Yamraj, the god of death. In this way we dedicate the dead body to the god of death, no one knows at what time death will come to a person, but always cremation is never done after sunset. Because of this, if someone has died after sunset, then it is a rule to burn it in the morning of the next day itself. It is a belief that by cremating after sunset, the soul of the deceased has to suffer a lot in the afterlife, and in the next birth, it may also suffer from some organ defect.

At the time of cremation, you often see that the person performing the rites takes water in a pot with holes and circumambulates the body placed on the pyre. At the end of which the pitcher is dropped and broken backward. This is done to disillusion the dead person’s body. However, there is also a philosophical mystery hidden behind it. Actually, it also means that our life is like a pot in the form of a hole, in which the water in the form of age is decreasing every moment.
